On Friday, September 25th 2026, the NMC Audio Technology Department will be setting up a massive outdoor sound system to recreate the enveloping sound-world of Georg Friedrich Haas's "in vain" (2000). We'll be listening to the recording made by Klangforum Wien conducted by Sylvain Cambreling. The event will be held on the campus quad, in the grassy area between Founders Hall and The Innovation Center. It's recommended that you bring a lawn chair or blanket to sit on. Also, this is Northern Michigan in late September, so you might want to bring something warm to wear since the 63-minute long piece will take us through dusk into night. We recommend that you arrive early to find a place to sit and get settled in.
This is the inaugural event of Grand Traverse Deep Listening, a new organization devoted to communal, long-form listening experiences with an emphasis on especially deep and powerful music with the ability to radically transform consciousness. GT Deep Listening is also focused on bringing music to the Traverse City area that could not, for all practical purposes, be performed in our area live. It is my belief that just because we live in an area with a relatively small population, we shouldn't be shut out from having the kinds of profound musical experiences that happen in concert halls in the major musical capitals of the world.
